HD DVD Players
The future of DVD technology is here! From the day that DVD players became
available in the UK we have all been marveling at the quality that DVD's
offer with their digital picture and sound quality.
But a new revolution has just hit the DVD and that is High Definition;
High Definition is abbreviated to HD
and basically offers a mind-blowing quality of picture! This is all down
to the resolution that HD uses, the resolution is the amount of pixels that
are used to make up the picture and the more pixels that are used the higher
the resolution is and the better the quality of the picture. A high definition
picture uses many more pixels than the old standard definition DVD's and
so the quality is much better, once you have watched an
HD DVD player there is no way that you will happily watch standard definition
again! The picture is so sharp that you could well be looking at live action
and the detail is incredible, whenever there is a close up the detail is
immense and you can see detail that simply is not there on a standard DVD.
To watch HD DVD's you have to have two things though: an HD television and
an HD DVD player. Old televisions that are not HD ready (and in fact quite
a few new ones) cannot display the HD detail as they do not have a high enough
resolution so if you were to watch an HD DVD player on a standard television
then it would look exactly the same as a standard DVD. So you have to
buy an HD television to enjoy HD DVD's
using an HD DVD player but once you have both you will have a jaw-dropping
on screen quality that will take your breath away!
So when you buy a new television you must make absolutely sure that it is
HD Ready, an HD Ready television can display all HD content
and will offer all that you need to enjoy HD DVD's. There are LCD and plasma
televisions that are HD ready and both offer a very high quality of picture,
the big brands like Sony and Panasonic generally offer the best results although
there are lots of cheaper options.
You also have to remember that there are new DVD formats that handle high
definition DVD and they are HD-DVD and Blu Ray. They are both different formats
and therefore will have their own machines so you will need to be careful
when you buy a new DVD, if you have an HD-DVD player then you will need to
buy an HD-DVD but if you have a Blu Ray DVD player then you should buy a
Blu Ray disc. You should not buy a standard DVD as these will not play in
the same quality, they will play in most HD-DVD players but they will not
have the same quality (although many HD-DVD players will upscale the quality
to a near HD level so you will still see an improvement on your old DVD's).
So when you buy a new DVD player you are going to have to choose between
HD-DVD and Blu Ray although there are going to be some DVD players that can
play both HD DVD disc types which is ideal. The Blu Ray DVD discs can hold
more data and so they will probably be the best choice as they can fit more
content onto them although the HD DVD discs still have a huge capacity.
And there are also a few other ways of getting an HD DVD player; the Playstation
3 has a built-in
Blu Ray DVD player while the Xbox 360 has a cheap add-on HD-DVD player and
you can also get an HD DVD player included in some home cinema systems and
entertainment packages that include a television and stand.
To connect the HD DVD player to your HD television you will probably use
an HDMI cable as most HD televisions and HD DVD players have an HDMI socket.
HDMI carries the HD signal perfectly and so offers the best results although
you can often use a component cable if you do not have an HDMI socket
on your television.
