Blu Ray DVD Players

With high definition DVD there are two choices of format and they are the Blu Ray and HD-DVD formats.

The Blu Ray DVD is so called because the machine uses a blue laser to read the disc, the old DVD players had a red laser and the blue laser has a shorter wavelength than the red laser. For this reason the Blu Ray discs can hold much more data with a single layer Blu Ray disc offering up to 25 Gigabytes (GB) and this could well be increased in the future. And the Blu Ray discs can also have several layers and duel layer Blu Ray discs are common with a 50GB capacity which is huge!

The Blu Ray discs will also be easy to identify as they will have a blue surround on the casing with a blue Blu Ray DVD logo at the top of the case.

This extra space is well needed though as high definition video has a much larger file size as there is so much more information to store. Even with HD content a duel layer Blu Ray disc can hold around 9 hours of content though and this is much larger than a standard DVD and so with Blu Ray discs you will have discs that are bursting with content and the old days of huge box sets of DVD's could well be over.

The Blu Ray DVD players will be able to display content at 1080p which looks stunning but you have to have an HD ready television that can handle 1080p. For HD Ready televisions that cannot display 1080p the Blu Ray DVD players will also be able to output 1080i and 720p and these will still look amazing on HD ready televisions (for more information on the resolutions see our HD resolutions page).

Blu Ray was developed by a wide selection of the top electronics manufacturers and they include Sony, Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, TDK and Thomson. Sony have been at the forefront of Blu Ray DVD and have included it in the Sony Playstation 3 console and so if you are planning on buying a Playstation 3 then you will have a full Blu Ray DVD player included. The other manufacturers will also be offering Blu Ray support with Blu Ray DVD players or Blu Ray drives in computers.

Blu Ray DVD players are not common in the UK at the moment but they will be soon and they are sure to take over from standard DVD along with HD-DVD in the near future. We have listed all of the Blu Ray players that we could find available to buy online in the UK on this page and so if you wish to buy a Blu Ray DVD player now then you can but be aware that the prices are very high but are sure to come down over time.
