HD-DVD Players

The HD-DVD format is the official successor to the standard DVD and has around three times the capacity of a standard DVD at 15 Gigabytes (GB) for a single layered HD-DVD disc.

There are however two formats in high definition DVD with Blu Ray being the other format and these have a larger capacity and so are generally seen as being the best high definition DVD option. The HD-DVD discs so store a huge amount of data though and so this may not be such an issue and they have easily enough space for any movie as well as lots of special features.

The HD-DVD DVD's also have a few advantages including that they are often double sided which allows film makers to include the standard definition film on one side and then the high definition film on the other side and this means that many HD-DVD DVD's can also be played in standard definition DVD players.

The HD-DVD films are easy to spot as they have a red band at the top of the case with the HD-DVD logo and some have a red surround around the whole case (the other high definition DVD format Blu Ray uses a blue band).

The HD-DVD players are also cheaper at the moment and so are a better option if you are planning on buying a high definition DVD player right now. If you own an Xbox 360 you can even buy an add-on HD-DVD player for just over £100 which is amazing value and a very cheap way of getting HD-DVD into your home.

The HD-DVD offers a pristine on screen quality of up to 1080p which simply has to be seen to be believed. For this you will need an HD Ready television that can support 1080p though although all HD-DVD players can also output 1080i and 720p which also looks superb.

The prices of HD-DVD players are high at the moment as they are a very new technology, you can buy HD-DVD discs though online and so there is no reason why you cannot start enjoying HD-DVD's in your home right now if you are willing to pay the high price of an HD-DVD player.
